Eldiren concentrated on the screeing glass, but despite the sweat on his forehead, he could not break through the white, swirling mists that covered the glass.
âOne of those placesâ¦â he muttered as he released his hold. The glass shimmered with the blankness of a mirror. He cleared his throat.
âItâs all those trees,â Beltar said, gesturing toward the ancient forest in the valley below the White camp. âIsnât that why no one can ever look into Naclos?â
âThatâs what they say.â Eldiren patted his still-damp forehead with a square of folded cloth. âWhen are we supposed to link up with Zerchas?â
âAfter we take Berlitos.â
âHow are we going to do that?â asked Eldiren. âI canât even see most of their troops because of the order in the trees. Trying to attack would cost us whatever troops we have left. Canât you shake it down?â
Beltar shook his head.
âThe trees?â Eldiren prompted.
âI donât know, but I canât tap enough of the chaos-flows in the ground. All I get are little tremors. Thereâs a lot of old order here.â
âStill, youâre not doing badly. We hold Clynya and Borntâonly that little place, whatâs-its-name, up on the first branch of the Sarronââ
âRohrn,â supplied Beltar. âForget it. That one will have to wait. We need to get through without losing any more troops. Clynya wasnât exactly a pushover. If you hadnât managed to circle back through the hills and start those firesââ
The herald entered the white-walled tent.
Beltar looked up. âYes?â
âThe Sarronnese refuse any terms, ser.â
âOh?â
âThey were most arrogant, ser.â Sweat streamed down the manâs face, and his blue cap, held at his waist in both hands, was dark with dampness. âTheyâ¦they said that Berlitos had never surrendered, not even to the greatest Tyrant in history, and that they werenât about to surrender now.â
âIdiots!â snapped Beltar.
The herald waited.
âNo, they wonât surrender. Of course they wonât. Honor and all that crap!â Beltar paced across the tent, then back.
The herald glanced toward Eldiren.
âSo now what?â Beltar asked.
Eldiren gestured toward the herald.
âOh.â Beltar nodded. âYou may go.â
âThank you. Thank you, ser.â The herald fled.
âYou seem to have them all terrified, Beltar.â
âI wish the order-damned Sarronnese were terrified instead. But no. Itâs like they have to force me to use my powers.â
âYou just said you couldnât do that here,â pointed out Eldiren.
âI said I couldnât shake down the damned city, and they probably know that.â The White Wizard fingered his chin. âYou were saying something, or I was. Fires, that was it. I wonder what Berlitos is built of. Thereâs not much stone around here.â
âYouâd burn it?â
âWhy not? Itâs better than losing an army. Jera is the only city I have to save.â Beltar smiled. âThey can use all these damned trees to rebuild itâ¦if there are enough of them left. Besides, the storms wonât hold off that much longer.â
âBurn it?â asked Eldiren again.
âWhy not? I seem to be condemned to use force. So I might as well. Right now, Zerchas wants results. Iâll get him his results.â Beltar walked to the entrance to the tent and looked down at the forest city of Berlitos.
